Fan Rock(man)s Out to Mega Man 2

Takes unprecedented approach to playthrough

By Dan Conlin, Staff Writer

So this happened.

It’s difficult to describe what I’m feeling right now. Jealousy, perhaps? Extreme happiness? The sudden urge to go to OCRemix and download everything I see (again)?

What we have here is the kind of moment in gaming that I really enjoy.

Many of us have seen Youtube videos of people playing along with a game’s soundtrack on pre-recorded footage of the game itself. But how often do you see a live band playing along with a game; while it’s being played?

I mean, sure, it’s not like it’s difficult to synchronize the music with a game like Mega Man 2. But it still makes the situation that much more satisfying to watch.

And you can watch it here, after the jump.

Taking place at MAGFest (Music and Gaming Festival) X, a convention of sorts that celebrates not only video games, but the music behind them, this is a fantastic example of how timeless so much classic video game music really is.

It’s a speed run of Mega Man 2 (a game with one of the single greatest soundtracks of all time) accompanied by video game cover band Bit Brigade playing the entire soundtrack along with it. It’s amazing enough when it begins, but when the player enters the first level and the band starts rocking Metal Man’s theme, that’s when you realize you need to find an NES right now.

But don’t take my word for it. The entire 44-minute epic is right below. Grab some popcorn and strap in for a hell of a ride.
